I recently had the opportunity to see and listen to one of my favourite DJs, Rocco Rodamaal, a long-time resident of the legendary Ambassade Club in Lyon. What I didn’t realise until I arrived was that Rocco would be the only DJ on the night…

The Ambassade: a legendary Lyon club
I’m always excited to return to the Ambassade. After opening in 1994, the club quickly grew to become a cornerstone of Lyon’s electronic music scene.
Known for its impeccable sound system and intimate atmosphere, the club has hosted generations of DJs who helped shape France’s underground house and techno movements. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, the Ambassade earned a reputation as one of Europe’s essential dance destinations thanks to its mix of artistry, experimentation and energy.
Standing on the quiet street in Lyon, you would never guess that right in front of you
is one of clubland’s most legendary destinations. There’s just a door beneath a small
canopy. It’s intriguing to ring the bell, see the door open and be greeted by someone
whose job is to ensure both your safety and the privacy of what happens inside.
Then you step into the small lobby, the outer door closes behind you, and another
gentleman opens a second internal door to reveal the main room: intimate, warm,
and alive with sound.
As I remember every time I go, this set-up is part of the magic of the Ambassade: a
two-stage entrance that not only keeps the experience exclusive but also ensures zero sound bleed into the street outside. It adds an almost Alice in Wonderland feel of mystery and anticipation, a quiet, secretive prelude to stepping into one of Lyon’s most loved underground club spaces.
Another thing that club adventurers like me love about the Ambassade is that despite
its long history and big name, most nights are free, with very reasonable drink prices.
This is all about supporting the music and the community — honest, respectful, and
rooted in a shared love of sound.
A thrilling journey
Every great club night is defined by one particular moment: a highlight that somehow
crystallises the whole experience. Mine was when I realised that the evening was all
about Rocco and his music. While there are many good things about events that
feature lineups of multiple DJs playing short, one-hour sets, there was something
truly special about knowing that this was Rocco’s show and no-one else’s. From his
first record on the stroke of midnight to his last tune at six in the morning, Rocco
delivered a six-hour masterclass in musical control and connection.

The way he built the night — layer by layer — was nothing short of inspiring. The
energy never dipped. The transitions between styles were seamless, each track perfectly chosen to tell part of a larger story. As an audio pro who has been to and worked at more club nights than I can even remember, I can confirm that this one was up there with the best. It was more than a performance; it was an education in how to move a crowd, guiding people through genres and emotions while maintaining flow and focus.
Adding to the magic was Rocco’s setup: one of two custom mixers, complete with
a DJ isolator, allowing him to sculpt the sound with precision and warmth. Every mix
felt alive — organic and dynamic, yet also unmistakably human.
By the end of the night, it was clear to me and to everyone there: Rocco simply rocked the spot. If only more DJs had the time to unfold their sets in this way.
In today’s world of short, festival-style rotations, one-hour sets can feel disposable —
moments that fade as quickly as they begin. But when an artist has six hours to craft
the journey, the result is something different entirely: an experience that stays with
you for life. As I know this one will for me.
Thank you, Rocco, for the music and your hospitality.
I look forward to coming back and listening to you again.
