Charles Webster
Charles Webster is one of the most respected and enduring figures in deep house and electronic music. A DJ, producer, remixer and label owner whose career stretches back to the formative years of house and techno, his music has consistently occupied the deeper, soulful and more experimental edges of the dancefloor.
Originally from Matlock in Derbyshire, Webster began making electronic music as a teenager before moving to Nottingham in the 1980s. His early studio career placed him alongside some of the pioneers of Detroit techno, working in sessions involving Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, while simultaneously developing his own distinctive approach to production and DJing.
Over the years he has recorded under numerous names and projects, most notably Presence, Furry Phreaks and Love From San Francisco, as well as extensively under his own name. His landmark Presence album All Systems Gone established Webster as a producer capable of bridging underground club music with beautifully crafted songs, while his 2001 solo album Born on the 24th of July further cemented his reputation for sophisticated, soulful electronic music.
Webster's catalogue spans house, deep house, downtempo, jazz and electronica, and his productions and remixes have appeared on respected labels including Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Freerange, Peacefrog, Sonar Kollektiv and Buzzin' Fly. His contribution to Defected's prestigious House Masters series placed him alongside some of house music's most influential artists.
After almost two decades between major solo albums, Webster returned in 2020 with Decision Time on Dimensions Recordings. The project included collaborations with Ingrid Chavez and a contribution from Burial, demonstrating that his appetite for exploring the boundaries between club music, songwriting and atmospheric electronics remains as strong as ever.
Behind the decks, Charles brings the same depth and musicality that defines his productions: soulful, understated and uncompromising selections shaped by decades spent immersed in underground music.
A true producer's producer and one of deep house music's most distinctive voices, Charles Webster remains an artist driven by musical substance rather than fashion.
